Manchester City could land one of La Masia’s hottest young prospects this summer – for nothing.
18-year-old Marc Cucurella, a Barcelona and Spain under-19 international left-back, is considered to be one of the best emerging talents at the Catalan club, but his contract is up in June.
Barça have been negotiating with Cucurella’s agent for a while now but still can’t come to an agreement after several rounds of talks, and the clock is ticking.
A number of clubs are interested in acquiring the full-back, but Marca only names one of them and that is Manchester City, who have previously been linked with a move.
City could need as many as two left-backs this summer, with Gaël Clichy out of contract and almost certain to go unless Pep Guardiola sees something in his performances that supporters are missing. The other senior left-back, Aleksandar Kolarov, has another 12 months remaining on his deal but has been used more regularly as a centre-back this season.
If City do go into the market for a pair of left-backs, Cucurella on a free transfer could compliment a marquee signing, with the likes of Benjamin Mendy of Monaco and José Luis Gayà of Valencia said to be on Guardiola’s radar.
