Reported Manchester City target Lucas Hernandez has today signed a new five-year deal with current club Atletico Madrid, seemingly quashing any chances of a summer move to the Etihad.

Both Lucas and his brother, Theo, were subject of a double swoop from City last summer, according to Miguel Ángel Gil Marín – Atletico’s CEO – and the Independent reported in January that Pep Guardiola had maintained interest in Lucas, but there now appears to be very little chance of tempting the 21-year-old to change his allegiance this summer.
Guardiola must now look elsewhere in his search for a left-footed centre-back – a role which has been filled by Aleksandar Kolarov for the most part of this season – that he had hoped to find initially in Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte and then Hernandez.
City could still move for Theo Hernandez – currently on loan at Alaves – but the likes of Virgil Van Dijk and Leonardo Bonucci have also been earmarked as potential options.
