Pep Guardiola asks Manchester City to target Bayern Munich defender – report

Pep Guardiola has identified Joshua Kimmich as a suitable candidate to bolster Manchester City’s defence in the summer. Pep has worked closely with the German defender before having signed him for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2015 and it is reported by Duncan Castles in Yahoo Sport that the 22-year-old is one of a number of potential reinforcements for an area considered a ‘major weakness’ in the current squad.

Other names being linked with the Blues are Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin, who has seen his playing time reduced in recent weeks with Arsenal switching to a new formation but has recently signed a new deal with the club. Fabinho of AS Monaco is another linked with City, and one who has proven over the course of the past two seasons his adaptability on the pitch. Starting his Monaco career as a right-back, Fabinho proved his competence on the ball and has since been moved closer to the centre of the pitch into midfield. A key requirement from a full-back in a Guardiola system.

Dani Alves is yet another player linked with City in the summer and once again it is someone who Pep knows very well, having worked with him a number of years during his career at Barcelona. At 33 years of age Alves is still playing at the highest level of football with Juventus and featured in both legs where they knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League. Before signing for the Italian giants Alves gave an interview to the Guardian last year in which he stated that ‘playing in England is something I’ve got pending.’ Adding fuel to any rumours linking him with a move to Manchester.

It will be no surprise to City fans that the club is being linked with a host of different defenders as it was identified early in the season as a major weakness in the squad. With three full-backs also set to leave the club in the summer out of contract, it would be no surprise to see the same number – or more – recruited.
