A few days ago, Barcelona legend Xavi Hernández caused a storm by implying that Pep Guardiola would try to sign Tottenham star Dele Alli in the summer. Except Xavi’s interview, reported as an “exclusive” by The Sun, never happened, the 37-year-old told Catalan newspaper SPORT today.
The fake news triggered Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino into something of a mini-meltdown, accusing Xavi of being an “enemy” for making those remarks.
Poch may owe Xavi an apology after they turned out to be made up, and Pep Guardiola has also reassured the former Espanyol player and manager that City will not be moving for Dele Alli.
“Mauricio Pochettino has to stay calm. Dele Alli is going to be his player next season, I am pretty sure of that,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.
“We don’t want Dele Alli. He is a fantastic player. He is such good news for English football. He is a fighter, attacking the box he is one of the most fantastic players I’ve seen in my life.
“But Manchester City doesn’t want Dele Alli.”
So there is one rumour settled. Just fifty or so more to go…
