Pep Guardiola has had enough of his defence and in particular left-back has become a problematic area of the pitch for his Manchester City side this season. With Aleksandar Kolarov more useful as a left-sided centre-back these days and Gaël Clichy a player in sharp decline, City desperately need at least one left-back this summer.
And according to France Football, 22-year-old Monaco powerhouse, Benjamin Mendy, is the man Pep wants to sort out the left-back position with a quick bid planned for the once-capped France international.
Guardiola was ‘seduced’ by Mendy’s performances against City in the Champions League, particularly in the second leg where he was outstanding and registered an assist in Monaco’s 3-1 win over City that sent the Blues crashing out of the competition.
It is claimed by France Football that Guardiola was monitoring Mendy last season prior to his €15 million move from Marseille to Monaco. And now, the City boss is ready to more than double Monaco’s investment in Mendy by offering €35 million (£29.9 million) to sign the player in the close season.
Chelsea are also said to want Mendy, but he is the player Guardiola has identified to replace fellow Frenchman, Gaël Clichy, who is out of contract in June and expected to end a six-year stay at the Etihad.
