The reliable Valencian press (Superdeporte and Plaza Deportivo) are both reporting this morning that Pep is ‘insistent’ on signing Valencia left-back José Gayà, despite his €50m release clause. Gayà was relentlessly linked to City when he burst onto the scene as an 18-year old after making an impressive appearances in La Liga. But, his form dipped considerably the following season amid the managerial merry-go-round and the links to Europe’s top clubs drifted away.

However, Gayà is ‘rediscovering his best form’ according to the two Valencian publications and it is this sharp up-turn in fortunes that has allegedly re-ignited Guardiola’s interest in the player. Pep believes that the now 21-year old will ‘fit perfectly into his system’ and is very keen on the player.

The only potential stumbling block to a deal is that Gayà has a €50m release clause in his contract but this is said not to deter City, who (as all know too well) are in desperate need of a left-back. With the right-back slot seemingly primed for AS Monaco’s Fabinho, it looks like Gayà could be City’s priority in the left-back position.

Until the end of March, the City Store is marking down some iconic Retro Shirts to £20 (£18 for Cityzens).
