Yaya Touré’s time with Manchester City has been filled with ups and downs. We’ve just about seen it all from the Ivorian, with the heights of scoring cup-winning goals matched by the lows of throwing various tantrums.
Many thought that we had seen the last of Touré after Manuel Pellegrini left the club, but Pep Guardiola decided to make him an important part of the squad for the 2016-2017 season (once an apology arrived for repeatedly criticising him).
Yaya has gone some way to salvaging his legacy after a disappointing couple of seasons, and it appears that the big man is still very happy in Manchester.
“Definitely. I love this football club,” he told Sky Sports when asked if he wants to stay at Manchester City beyond this season.
Yaya also took the time to praise his manager, Pep Guardiola, for his efforts in getting him back to his best.
“Last year I was overweight, it was a difficult situation, there were a lot of problems with my family. I was talking with him (Pep) most of the time and people were not seeing that on the screen. Those talks will stay between him and me. He knows what I can do and what I’m capable of doing,”
“He’s been honest with me. He is the guy that pushed me up, made me come back and that’s why I’m feeling respectful with him and that’s why I want to show him he was right.”
While Pep and Yaya have had their differences in the past, it appears that they now have a very good relationship.
“He is a special guy in football..” said Touré.
It remains unclear if Touré will receive a new deal in the summer, when he is one of a host of City players out of contract. In the past 24 hours, following the Champions League exit to Monaco, many of the country’s most well-sourced City journalists have reported that Guardiola will oversee a ruthless overhaul, which could include Yaya’s exit and a gross spend of up to £200 million.
Until the end of March, the City Store is marking down some iconic Retro Shirts to £20 (£18 for Cityzens).
