Bayern Munich and Germany defender Holger Badstuber is only a step away from joining an English club on loan, according to the reputable Kicker.

Only one Premier League club has been linked with the 27-year-old in recent weeks and that is Manchester City, which seems logical with Pep Guardiola having worked with Badstuber at Bayern and short on reliable defensive options right now.

Kicker does not specify which English club Badstuber is likely to join, but state that should the deal be completed, it will be a six-month loan move. This is the ideal move for both Bayern Munich and the player, who is very injury prone and out of contract next summer.

A successful six month loan spell in the Premier League could lead to a contract extension at Bayern for a player who came through their youth system and is highly regarded at the Allianz Arena. Like City’s Vincent Kompany, Badstuber has been beset by injury problems, managing just 28 appearances in all competition in the last three and a half seasons.

However, with Pep Guardiola preferring to wait until summer for major reinforcements, with Atlético Madrid centre-back Lucas Hernández said to be the main target, a temporary deal for Badstuber could help stabilise a shaky back line.
