They are two of Manchester City’s brightest young talents, but with four full-backs over 30 in Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad, 19-year-olds Angeliño and Pablo Maffeo are having to bide their time for regular chances in Pep Guardiola’s side.
The two Spanish starlets have joined City’s partner club, Girona FC, on loan for the remainder of the 2016-17 campaign, where they will hope to play regularly.
Maffeo returns to the Catalan club a year after another loan spell there, where he made 13 appearances in the Segunda División. Since returning to City, he has made three appearances – two in the Champions League – and looks very close to a breakthrough with right-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna getting no younger. Maffeo did himself no harm with an excellent performance against Manchester United in the EFL Cup, where he kept Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba quiet for periods of the game.
Angeliño is embarking on his second loan spell with a CFG partner club following a year at New York City FC, and made appearances against Steaua Bucuresti (Champions League qualifier) and Swansea City (EFL Cup) this season, but like Maffeo, has experience standing in his way at left-back in the form of Gaël Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov.
