Just when you thought the Julian Weigl rumours were dead and buried following his new long-term deal until 2021 with Borussia Dortmund, Spanish publication AS has come out with a big new claim.
It’s no secret that Pep Guardiola is a big fan of the 21-year-old Germany midfielder, a pass master who seems almost a perfect Guardiola prototype midfielder, but the youngster’s renewal with BVB looked to make this signing impossible any time soon.
But it seems that Guardiola doesn’t care and according to AS, he has ordered City director of football, Txiki Begiristain, to try again for Weigl next summer as he looks to strengthen his squad with new blood. City are loaded with attacking midfield options, but have fewer options for the deep-lying midfield role.
The Spanish publication notes that Barcelona are also very keen on Weigl, who they see as a potential long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets in the anchor position, but Barça may not be able to match the economic power of City, who are richer than ever thanks to the incredible TV money Premier League clubs are now receiving.
Should City go knocking for Weigl again, Borussia Dortmund will no doubt be reluctant to answer the door, but in football money talks and City may have enough to tempt the Bundesliga side into parting with their crown jewel. Were he to move to the Etihad, he could reform his BVB midfield partnership with İlkay Gündoğan, who will be back from a season-ending cruciate ligament injury in time for the 2017-18 campaign.
