Manchester City continue to be linked with a host of names as Pep Guardiola looks and rebuild the squad in his image. Little to no activity is expected in January, but there are likely to be major changes next summer and planning will already be underway.
And according to BILD, City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain was in Germany on Saturday to watch Borussia Dortmund face Köln at the RheinEnergieStadion.
BILD suspect he was there to observe Julian Weigl, a midfielder Pep Guardiola has praised in the past and who has been repeatedly linked with City in recent months.
However, the latest reports indicate that Weigl is only a signature away from renewing his BVB deal until 2021. If Txiki Begiristain is aware of this, and he likely is, that begs the question why was he in Dortmund last weekend?
Begiristain could still believe Weigl is obtainable at an inflated price or perhaps he was watching another player on show. City have been interested in Dortmund hitman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang throughout 2016, with the Gabonese international admitting there were talks last summer.
Other potential players of interest could include Marc Bartra, who played for Guardiola at Barcelona, and Christian Pulisic, who was tenuously linked with City several months ago – but neither featured in Dortmund’s game against Köln.
