Where will Lionel Messi go if he ever leaves FC Barcelona? Is this even a question worth asking, as despite stories every year that the world’s greatest footballer could be on the move, he remains at Barcelona and is likely to for a long time.
However, anything is possible in football and according to an exclusive report in The Sun, it would be the blue side of Manchester in pole position to sign 29-year-old Messi should he decide on a new adventure away from Camp Nou.
This information comes from an unnamed ‘United source’, who told The Sun, “City would be the favourites if he were to one day leave, but we would obviously love the sign a player of that level. We can certainly compete on the cash front and Messi is an Adidas player like Paul Pogba, so we have our pluses. But all the same, we would not get involved in any bidding war unless Messi’s camp gave an indication that he was willing to come here.”
Attempts to lure Messi to the Etihad would be boosted by the presence of his close friend Sergio Agüero, former boss Pep Guardiola, and several men in power that the Argentine has previously worked with, including director of football Txiki Begiristain and CEO Ferran Soriano.
The likelihood is that Messi will remain an FC Barcelona player for many more years, but if he does decide on something new, Manchester City could be well positioned to sign him up.
