Manchester City 4-0 Borussia Mönchengladbach: Player Ratings

Claudio Bravo – 8

After an indifferent derby day debut, Bravo was nothing short of confident and comfortable in possession whilst providing decent distribution when forced to go longer. Got down to his left hand side brilliantly to save a low drive from a corner late in the first half. Was calmly in front of three of our defenders in possession on 90 minutes.

Pablo Zabaleta – 7.5

Solid and reliable without being outstanding. The days of him flying down the touchline are all but over but instead he contributed well in possession in the middle of the pitch, often stepping inside alongside Fernandinho. Saw more of him motoring down the line in the second half, never really troubled at the back.

Nicolas Otamendi – 7.5

Another solid display from the bearded one. A couple of decent blocks and clearances in the first half where he seemed to be regularly moving down the right hand flank instead of Zaba. Needlessly booked in the second half for tugging back a player being covered by Ferna.

John Stones – 8.5

Possibly his most complete performance in a City shirt. Blocked shots well in the first half, defended what he had to expertly in the second as well as roaming freely around the pitch with an almost Busquets like confidence. An absolute sight to see him stride out and dispossess attackers and then move the ball on seamlessly.

Aleksandar Kolarov – 8

Once again, very difficult to find fault in anything a City defender did. Absolute trademark low-driven cross into the box for Aguero’s first goal. He looked a little more troubled with the pace that substitute Hazard provided but was moved inside and ended the match playing at centre mid.

Fernandinho – 8.5

Superb all round display once again. Beautiful through ball for KDB in the first half, smothered every single BMG forward move with consistently aggressive pressing. I can barely remember him fouling anyone which is a first.

Jesus Navas – 7

Nothing really seemed to go down his flank all night, got into it a little more in the second half. Lots of energy as always, seemed to be a little panicked when approaching the opposition to defend.

Ilkay Gundogan – 8.5

What a debut, looked like he’d been in that midfield for years. Brought down for the penalty in what was an exciting first half. So many spins and turns that left the opposition for dead at times, can’t wait to see him when he’s fully match sharp – his combination work with KDB and Ferna was so encouraging to see, especially so early on in the season, let alone a debut!

Raheem Sterling – 8

Held the ball up well for Kolarov’s assist in the first half. Managed to retain possession whilst on his backside after dancing around a pair of BMG defenders. Great reverse ball for Aguero’s hat-trick goal assist. Always excited when he was running at their defence but didn’t get too many opportunities to do that until later on in the second half.

Kevin De Bruyne – 9 (Man of the Match)

An absolute puppet master. Controlled the match, especially in the second half where he seemed to spring attacks wherever and whenever he wanted. He seemed to ghost around linking up with Gundogan and Fernandinho effortlessly as well as driving out of midfield to start counter attacks brilliantly. A complete joy to watch.

Sergio Aguero – 9

Clinical. Fantastic first time finish from Kolarov’s ball into the box. Confident penalty for his second, watching and waiting for the keeper to move before sending him the wrong way. Latched onto Sterling’s great reverse ball to round Sommer smoothly and slot into an empty net for his hat-trick. Afforded a standing ovation as he went off, nice to see he’s still as sharp as ever whilst he sits out his PL ban.

Subs:

Leroy Sané – 7.5

It may be a bit unfair to Navas but Sane was out wide for 10 minutes facing the same, albeit a decidedly more tired, backline and managed to dance around them to put an opportunity on a nice big shiny plate for Kelechi. Can’t wait to see him from the start.

Kelechi Iheanacho – 7.5

Once again dispatching a chance clinically. I couldn’t help but get very excited when seeing Sane dance around defenders to lay it off to him, he finishes so coolly it was never in doubt when it arrived at his feet.

Gael Clichy – N/A

Too late to mark.
