Referee appointed for Manchester City vs. Sunderland

Manchester City kick off their first season under the leadership of Pep Guardiola this Saturday at the Etihad Stadium. Despite a disjointed pre-season, there is great excitement about what the Catalan coach will bring the club in the coming years. First up is the return of David Moyes, who will still be having nightmares of derby day at the Etihad during his time in charge of Manchester United. This time he leads Sunderland, a club with a recent history of troubling the Blues.

For the first game of the season, Bobby Madley has been named match referee with Neil Swarbrick the fourth official.

City have won three and lost two of their last five games with Madley at the helm. Most recently was the 4-0 win over Bournemouth on April 2, towards the end of last season. Madley also took charge of the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg against Everton at Goodison, which the hosts won, before City overturned the deficit at the Etihad.

This weekend’s match officials in full:

Manchester City v Sunderland
Referee: Bobby Madley
Assistants: P Kirkup, M Perry
Fourth official: N Swarbrick
