Another day, another name. Despite reports that Everton defender John Stones is close to joining Manchester City and Juventus centre-back Leonardo Bonucci is also wanted, another young defender is today being linked with Pep Guardiola’s side.
This time it is Atlético Madrid rising star Lucas Hernández, a 20-year-old Frenchman who has recently broken into Diego Simeone’s team and who towards the end of last season regularly appeared for Los Colchoneros in La Liga. Hernández is rated as one of European football’s most talented upcoming defenders and has represented France at youth level.
According to this exclusive story by The Sun, Hernández has a modest release clause of £20 million, and Simeone is trying desperately to convince him to stay. Guardiola is said to be a big fan of the Marseille-born youngster, who has also caught the eye of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain.
One thing is for certain: City will not be signing three centre-backs during this transfer window. If there is any truth to this story, Hernández may be an option in the event of deals for Stones or Bonucci not happening. Another young La Liga centre-back, Aymeric Laporte, already turned down a move to the Etihad this summer when it had seemed almost certain he was on the way.
