Pick a name. Any name. Chances are, if he’s any good, he’s been linked with Manchester City in the past few years. Every rumour must be taken with a pinch of salt, but the latest is hard not to get excited over, even if it it may well just end up as more paper talk.
France Football claims today that 39-goal Borussia Dortmund hot-shot Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is on the shortlist of primary targets Pep Guardiola has handed to City chiefs.
Many names have been linked persistently in the months since Guardiola was announced, but Aubameyang has only had a mention here or there. This report is more insistent that the 26-year-old is one of Guardiola’s main requests to rebuild the City squad, along with the regularly linked Leroy Sané of Schalke. The two would add scary pace to a City side that can often come across as cumbersome, and Pep loves his speed merchants having worked with the likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery in recent years.
France Football goes as far to claim that ‘discussions are ongoing’ for Aubameyang, but do note that Real Madrid and Barcelona also like the French-born Gabonese international, who could also yet stay in Dortmund this summer. A partnership with Kun Agüero and Kevin De Bruyne is mentioned, a trio that would scare the daylights out of Premier League defenders.
As for Sané, there is very little new information in the report, which states that City hope to convince Schalke to sell the 20-year-old sensation, who has been named in Germany’s preliminary squad for Euro 2016.
