On This Day – April 21: Manchester derby marred by Keane/Haaland incident (2001)

On April 21 in City history…

2001: Manchester City leave Old Trafford with a 1-1 draw, although the game was soured by a dreadful tackle by Roy Keane on Alfie Haaland. The United man had been out for retribution for a while, and made his mark on the City defender with a quite shocking challenge. Steve Howey scored City’s only goal in this eventful Manchester derby, which attracted a crowd of 67,535.

2002: Despite being relegated the season before, City found their groove in the second tier of English football, showcasing some joyous football. It was on this day that Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth were dispatched of, with Kevin Keegan’s side winning 3-1 thanks to goals from Howey, Goater and Macken.
