On This Day – April 16: Ardwick AFC becomes Manchester City

On April 16 in City history…

1894 Manchester City, as we know it today, is born, as the club changes its name from Ardwick FC and formally becomes a fully registered company titled Manchester City Football Club Limited. Ardwick had endured financial troubles, something that is unlikely to be a concern in the year 2016!

1997: City sweep aside Grimsby Town 3-1 at Maine Road in the old Division One. A brace from Nicky Summerbee, as well as a goal from Dalian Atkinson during his brief stay, helped the Blues to a second win on the bounce.
