On This Day – April 12: City sack Ron Saunders after a disappointing spell

On April 12 in City history…

1974: Manchester City manager Ron Saunders is relieved of his duties by the club after a woeful run of form that left the Blues 14th in the table. The appointment of Saunders was a disaster, with City looking particularly weak upfront and only scoring 38 goals in 29 games.

2003: City fans leave Maine Road frustrated after a drab 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough. Despite having the likes of Anelka and Fowler, City couldn’t break down a stubborn Middlesborough defence, and had to settle for a share of the points.

Happy Birthday: Sylvinho (42)
