On This Day – April 6: Derby delight in ’46, derby despair in ’96

On April 6 in City history…

1946: In one of City’s last wartime matches, they crush rivals Manchester United 4-1 at Maine Road. All four goals were scored by the legendary George Smith, including three in seven minutes, delighting the 62,000 assembled at Maine Road.

1996: 50 years to the day after George Smith’s heroics, City are beaten 3-2 at Maine Road by United. Despite being cheered on by close to 30,000 fans, United proved too large a task, with goals from Mikhail Kavelashvili and Uwe Rosler not enough to stop Alex Ferguson’s side from taking all three points.

Happy Birthday: Ronald Hildersley (51)
