On This Day – March 24: City face Górnik Zabrze in Cup Winners Cup

On March 24 in City history…

1971: City beat Polish side Górnik Zabrze 2-0 on a waterlogged Maine Road pitch in the quarter finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. With City losing the first leg by the same score, the tie had to be replayed at a neutral venue in Copenhagen as penalties weren’t allowed. Imagine that nowadays with the fixture pile-ups!

2010: City lose 2-0 at home to David Moyes’ Everton. Goals from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta were enough for the Toffees to claim all three points, in what was another blow to Roberto Mancini’s hopes of City finishing in the top four. Mancini himself was sent off during the match, as was Moyes following a confrontation between the two fiery managers.

Happy Birthday: Geoff Hammond (66)
