On This Day – March 19: Shay Given stars in UEFA Cup shootout

On March 19 in City history…

1904: Manchester City reach the final of the FA Cup after an impressive 3-1 win in the against Sheffield Wednesday. Mancunian football legend Billy Meredith was the key man, scoring and starring as City continued their push for silverware.

2009: Shay Given became a City hero as the Blues progressed in the UEFA Cup following a penalty shootout win against Danish side Aalborg. Despite having a 2-0 lead in the first leg, the Danish side scored two goals in the last ten minutes to take the game to extra time and penalties. Given ensured City progressed in what would be the last UEFA Cup before it became the Europa League, saving two penalties as City won the shootout.
