On This Day – March 7: Umbro Stand opens at Maine Road

On March 7 in City history…

1979: Manchester City are held to a 1-1 draw by German side Borussia Mönchengladbach. The UEFA Cup quarter-final first leg was watched by 39,000 fans at Maine Road, with the Blues unable to take a lead over to Germany for the second leg, despite Mick Channon’s solo strike.

1993: The Umbro Stand was opened to the public at Maine Road following extensive redevelopment in 1992. The final capacity of the stand, which reverted to its former Platt Lane Stand name later in the 1990s, was 4,548.
