City are pushing for Ilkay Gündogan – or are they?

Catalan daily SPORT brought us exciting news this morning that Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gündogan told Barcelona he doesn’t want to join them – because he plans to follow Pep Guardiola to Manchester. Gündogan, who famously (or infamously) made Yaya Touré and Javi Garcia look second rate in the Champions League a few years ago, has recovered well from a serious injury and has been in good form for BVB. So there was much excitement this morning when we posted the news on Twitter.

We’re used to newspapers or local journalists spoiling a good transfer rumour, but not the club itself – on Twitter! Dortmund posted a good natured response to SPORT that didn’t exactly refute the story, but hardly endorsed it either.

Soon after, German newspaper SPORT BILD also decided to spoil the fun, posting their information that while City have had interest in the 25-year-old German international midfielder, there was nothing to SPORT’s story.

Well, that was that. Party over, another rumour here one minute, gone the next. But wait, there’s more!

For football transfer news in Europe, there is no one more famous than the great Gianluca Di Marzio, and the King of Calciomercato brought the party back to life tonight.

When the Sky Italia man speaks, it’s wise to listen. And Di Marzio’s story, sourced from his German connections, says City are very interested in Gündogan and are pushing for his signature. Di Marzio calls Gündogan a player with the right profile for Manchester City – especially Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City – and adds that the club do not want to pass this opportunity to sign the midfield ace.

There is competition from Barcelona, but Di Marzio claims City are determined not to lose out on this player. PSG are staying out of the race, while Juventus maintain an interest, but the appeal of working with Pep Guardiola could lead to Gündogan wearing the sky blue of City next season.

An in-form Gündogan would be a superb addition to the ranks. He’s just one of many midfielders being linked at the moment – Toni Kroos was another mentioned today. The common denominator of this group of players is that they are all classy, talented midfielders. So whoever we end up with this summer, be it Xhaka, Gundogan, Pogba or even Busquets, expect a much stronger midfield at the Etihad next season.

Here’s Gündogan in action for BVB and Germany if you’ve somehow never seen him play:
